What is needed

This is a Windows-only demo for the moment. I'd love to do a Mac and Linux version, it would not be difficult, but not now.

Minimum system requirement is a graphics card capable of decent 3D performance (at least those that are capable of OpenGL 1.1). But you will need to get the latest driver to experience the "break-free" mode because Blackbox requires OpenGL 1.3 for that. You can test graphics card compatibility with this utility.

To see how to run the demos and what to do with them, go here. In a nutshell, download everything into the same directory and then execute the file with ".exe"

  patcher-2003-04-08.exe

last update: 8th April 2003

This patch fixes some problems with XP, and removes the need for ifl0.dll.

This patch affects only core.bbx. It is self-running, and because it didn't create any window, it would seem like it is doing nothing. Just click 'OK' and wait for another message box to pop-up.

  patcher-2003-04-01.exe

last update: 1st April 2003

This patch will enable systems without updated 3D drivers to work in fullscreen mode, instead of copping out mysteriously. This patch affects only core.bbx. It is self-running, and because it didn't create any window, it would seem like it is doing nothing. Just click 'OK' and wait for another message box to pop-up.

BBX-MP3PlayerSkinningKit.zip (825 KB)

BBX-MP3PlayerSkinningKit-Full.zip (4.57 MB)

This skinning kit contains tools and instructions on how to modify the look and feel of a Blackbox app, with the player as an example. For more skins, go here.

(The Full version contains ifl0.dll and core.bbx, the run-time files needed)

BBX-Demos.zip (1.89 MB)

BBX-Demos-Full.zip (5.66 MB)

last update: 9th April 2003

A zipped file (you know what that is, don't you) that contains

  • core.bbx (only in Full version)
  • intro.exe
  • chaser.exe
  • bear.exe
  • player.exe
  • uther.exe
  • checker.exe
checker.exe (219 KB)

last update: 9th April 2003

An amazing illusion. Really. Check out the screenshot too.

You can press the 'q' and 'w' keys to toggle the mask.

showit.exe (216 KB)

last update: 25th March 2003

You'll need to update your core.bbx for this to work (sorry about that).

For the commandline types, type something like this:

showit.exe mycube.3ds mycubeskin.png

For mouse junkies, you will have to create a short-cut and dump it on the desktop. Then just drop your stuff in.

fyi, 1 unit is equivalent to 1 pixel. So a unit cube would be virtually invisible.

  ifl0.dll (101 KB)

This is a needed file from SGI's Image File Library.

Update: with the patcher-2008-04-08.exe, this is no longer needed.

core.bbx (3889 KB)

last update: 8th April 2003

Without this, the following demos would not work.
bot.exe (485 KB)

last update: 9th April 2003

The Bot introduces the Blackbox Technologies, PowerPoint style.

The bot is a metallic stick figure created from an experiment on 3D metallic stick figure animation. Bot here can run, walk, wave and even scratch its leg when it is itchy. But no, it does not know how to sit or roll over. Yet.

chaser.exe (407 KB)

last update: 9th April 2003

The Lonely Chaser adores the mouse cursor.

The chaser lives on a little green planet with a half-buried green ball as its companion. It may not be obvious here, but the chaser is totally fascinated by the heavenly body called the mouse cursor.

bear.exe (734 KB)

last update: 9th April 2003

The Perpetual Bear does not know how to stop walking in circles.

This teddy bear with a red ribbon is constantly walking in circles, because it does not have the 3D mesh for standing still. But not to worry, it has a speech bubble to keep it company. The perpetual bear is also cel-shaded, fyi.

player.exe (390 KB)

last update: 9th April 2003

A 3D MP3 player.

Yes, this is a totally cool, functional, no-frills, proof-of-concept-only 3D MP3 player. 'nuff said.

Note: the player does not come with any MP3s. You will have to create a file called "mp3list.txt" and put in the fully-pathed names of the MP3s you want the player to play (eg. f:\stash\mp3\sample.mp3)

uther.exe (410 KB)

last update: 9th April 2003

A cool character from the fantastic WarCraft III.

I'm doing this solely as a WarCraft III fan.
